Admission exams & 2nd placements

A) Admission Exams

There are degree programmes admission to which is planned at national level. Applicants to such courses are requested to sit for compulsory admission exams; the exam agenda is announced in due time yearly. Here is the list of the degree programmes concerned:

National planning

• Corsi di Laurea-CL and Corsi di Laurea Magistrale-CLM devised for the education and training of architects;
• Corso di Laurea Specialistica / Magistrale a ciclo unico-CLSu/CLMu in Medicine
• Corso di Laurea Specialistica / Magistrale a ciclo unico-CLSu/CLMu in Dentistry
• Corso di Laurea Specialistica / Magistrale a ciclo unico-CLSu/CLMu in Veterinary Medicine
• Corsi di Laurea-CL and Corsi di Specialistica / Magistrale-CLS/CLM for the health professions
• Corso di Laurea quadriennale (4-year CL) in Sciences of Primary Education.

Local planning

H.Ed. institutions (both universities and Afam institutions) have the faculty to autonomously plan the max. number of available places for each of their degree programmes, and to decide specific entrance requirements. Therefore, they may require compulsory exams for admission to some of their courses. For instance:

• All CDA1 (Corsi di Diploma Accademico di 1° livello) and CDA2 (Corsi di Diploma Accademico di 2° livello) in the arts and music, that is 1st and 2nd cycle programmes at Afam institutions: Italian as well as international candidates have all to pass an entrance exam which is also meant to check their aptitude and level of competence in the chosen subject field.
• The passing of an admission exam may be requested by Italian institutions from candidates of countries where matriculation in H.Ed. is restricted by numerus clausus.

Exam dates are communicated in due time by individual institutions in the public notice (bando di concorso) to be drawn up for each of such degree programmes. Public notices are put up at the notice-boards of the relevant Faculties. Also single institution websites may be a source of useful information.

Remember

Participation in admission exams is allowed on the basis of pre-enrollment applications as well as of different modalities autonomously decided by Italian institutions.

Within 15 days from the exams, on the basis of their outcomes individual institutions have to publish two distinct grading lists: one shall list the names of all the candidates who passed the exams, the other the names of the winners of the available places within the reserved quotas.

B) 2nd Placements

Applicants who pass the admission exams but do not qualify for a place within the quotas reserved in the chosen degree programmes are defined "idonei" and are given a second opportunity, whenever possible.
To such an end, each Italian university has to publicize details of still available places so that all idonei may:

1. Either be admitted to another degree programme at the same university, provided their secondary qualification grants access also to such a course;
2. Or apply for a new placement at another university, either in the same type of degree programme or in a different one, provided provided their secondary qualification grants access also to new degree course, and they submit a statement from their first choice institution confirming that they have already passed the indispensable admission exams.

As concerns the applications described under letter b., candidates must address them to the Rector of the university of their second choice as well as to the Rector of the university where they passed the admission exams.

Remember

• Each "idoneo" is allowed to submit just one 2nd placement application.
• Universities are free to determine their own criteria for the acceptance of new placement applications: e.g. they may ask for additional aptitude tests).
• If you are accepted for a 2nd placement, it is a task of the accepting institution to ask for the transmission of your documents from the university of your first choice.
